\'Cheap\' Tactics
I was playing someone here on chesshere. I was a pawn down in a game with very few pieces remaining and he had basically no time left on his clock. So I simply darted my queen around, checking his king, until his clock ran out. He called me a cheat and said that if I had any honour I would just resign. If he had been able to make moves quicker throughout the game he wouldn't have been in that situation. What's your opinion on this? In my opinion it's legitimate. There were ways to stop the checks but they required serious thinking.Comments: 30

I think your tactics were quite legitimate, especially if there was a possibility that he could have played a dud move. It was his fault entirely that he found himself in difficulty since it's fine to have a winning position but you don't 'deserve' the victory if you've taken too long to get there. If the weaker side checks repeatedly and annoyingly with no hope of victory except by the clock, I think that's OK too since one is entitled to press for a draw by three fold repetition of position. If your opponent can't demonstrate the win in the time allotted to him, that's his bad luck.

It's certainly not cheating and is absolutely within the rules of the game. But is it in the spirit of the game? I suspect not. I guess it really depends on how much you value winning.

That's just part of the game, mate. It's a legitimate way to win, if a little less honorable than checkmate or resignation.

Checking his king and running him out of time is a very legitimate way of winning in my opinion. The reason it is timed is so that you have a limited time to think, and since he couldn't think as fast as you in the right moments, you beat him. Seems fair to me.

You will meet people like that who just get angery because they are playing a good game but make a huge mistake, such as time, and just because you take advantage of such mistake, they think that you are cheating. as far as i'm concerned using time aganst him was just another great combination to win.

the clock is part of a timed game. You played smart! Always play to win.
