My motivation to play chess online
by turtlemanSTUDENTS!! That's my motivation. I could come up with many intelligent and logical reasons to play online, but the real answer is simple...students. I teach chess at 3 elementary schools and 1 middle school. To teach I must learn. The best platform tfor me to learn is online chess. It's quieter, more relaxing and less confusing than trying to learn from students across aboard. "I need help," is not echoed from me as in a school setting. Yes, students are my motivation in playing online. In return I hope I am able to motivate others from my online experiences.

by farewellchessChess is perhaps the most complex cerebral game man has ever invented. It contains billions of varieties, so much so, that even the giant chess software can't ensure you a sure win despite its gigantic capacity to calculate trillions of moves within a few seconds. Secondly, chess demands a beautiful combination of science & art, sheer logic & mysterious creativity. Thirdly, chess is perhaps one of the very few games that eliminates the component of luck. If you lose none else is to blame; if you win you solely deserve the credit yourself. Fourthly, online chess has many edges over OTB chess. For instance, elderly people like me who have physical constraints can join the battle of wits from the comfort of their homes. CC confers the additional benefits of extra time & opportunity to consult books, database etc, to minimize mistakes & sharpen one's skill at the game. Finally, it's a bit cruel but factually true that chess is not meant for the dullards who go for launde ... Read more >>>
More than a yottabyte cubed....
by eljon_2007So what motivates me?
Aside from massive amounts of endorphin and dopamine (and other "happy" hormones) that are released from my hypothalamus whenever I play chess?
This thought.
It is estimated that the possible variations in chess is roughly a googol and a septillion.
That is one followed by 124 zeros...
and the possible number of positions in a game of 40 moves is between 10^40 - 10^50...
and about 10^83 for 80 moves.
and there are only 10^80 atoms in our observable universe.
Talk about numbers, chess is the only thing that comes close to this.
Some predicted that when computer memories reach the order of n- yottabyte, chess will be solved...
Untrue, of course. And one can ask a theorerical physicist about this...
No one, nothing will ever solve chess.
This thought, in itself, is an intrinsic reward. This reward motivates me.
and for the "online" thingy, its JUST MORE FUN to PLAY ONLINE!!
Chess - The classic battle of logic.
by RitadhoogeChess: The classic battle of logic. In the battle of logic invisible fences of war are created by the power of each piece. Little soldiers are sent forth first to break the way to success or failure. I hear the knights’ horses’ hooves galloping across the field and jumping over hindrances both black and white. I see the bishops sliding gracefully diagonally from side to side. I smell the sweet presence of two Beauties challenging each other as they stare towards one another across the face of blocks. It is a battle without audible cries or visual agony. Instead the pieces disappear silently leaving empty spaces. The rooks have more freedom as the field open up to untie them from their limitations. Alas for those who move too quickly, too impatiently and inattentively over the borders of the other land. A dreamy eye, a fatal hand, a subjective thought can lead to the loss of a whole army… And finally the King. The noblest of them all, he has to be protected, always kept in mind for h ... Chess is indeed a fascinating Game.- chess online
by DhuntChess is like a world of people that move around that invloves strategy, skill, and sometimes speed depending on the rules. Chess is a main part of me, a part of me motivates me into chess. I was always into chess since early childhood.
When I was six years old I had problems to pronounce and speak. When my Dad taught me some of the chess peices I would loudly say "Rock, knight, Chippy". I always had some problems but it never kept me back from learning chess. I kept on playing game after game and lost. Still with courage I kept on playing, I was born with a great gift, this gift of stubbornness that kept me going. My Dad ranked 1900 points, This was a barrier to most and to me I had even a bigger barrier to overcome as I had speech problems at the time but this did not better at hold I kept on playing. At the age of 10 I had my first win, still kept on playing, I had just this little gift within me that kept me going and going.
Still continued, at the age of 13 I won t ... Read more >>>
Why Play Chess Online?
by missingno000The reason that I choose to play chess online is that you can reach millions of opponents, instead of the few (if any) near your house/hotel/condo/etc. Also, you can choose correspondence chess (which I like because you have more time to think about your next move) or real-time chess (which feels more like a real game). Also, you can play an unlimited number of simultaneous matches (in the real world, you're limited to the number of chess sets you can dig up).CJ ... Read more >>>
Why I\'m motivated to play chess online
by yoni00I fell in love with chess just a few short years ago when my then partner taught me the basics. Sadly, no-one else in my circle of friends play the game so my learning was at the time restricted to a few games every now and then, and, consequently, my skill level is low but the enjoyment level, regardless, is high. When I found out that you could play chess on line with 'real' people I hunted for a site that would offer me this and found this one. Well, wow! I can play chess at any time I choose. I can play long, short, or super short games - all good fun. My skills are very slooowwwwly improving with the help of some wonderful players who will spend a bit of time to tell me what I'm doing wrong. I get to chat to people from all around the world and from all walks of life and ages, and what else can I say except what more could you ask for. Enjoy you won't regeret it.

by _Zero_ToleranceFor me, playing chess online is like being in a world wide arena where anything is possible, it is a chance to duel the best players from every continent not simply harnessing your own skills but forcing you to meet opponents who think in a completely different manner to yourself, and this, as opposed to simply playing the same faces in your local area or regional competitions, makes online chess more than just a game but something alive and very exciting.
I find that when playing online a game can turn at any moment; I am even more suspicious of underhand plotting because I have never met my opponent before and will probably never play him again giving him a whole sleeve of tricks to utilise at any moment. Of course this sword is double edged as I am also able to use my own tricks and skills to coax and defeat an adversary adding a distinctive feature to every game. Respect is another interesting factor in online chess. When an opponent evade ... Read more >>>
