Here a nice true story:
In Holland we playing chess in a local retirement centre, one night a 80 year old man how live there came in and have a look at the chess,I ask do you like to play a game, yes was his answer, a week laster the team has to go to play an other club in the country, just before we left theclub champion rang that he was in a miner exident and gould not make it,so I ask the old man if he like to join the team, was fine with him.I place him on board 1 because this is a lost game.

I will try to put it into words what chess represents for me and what chesshere means to me
by orangechessMy name is Mark, I am 29 years old, and I am living 15 minutes from Amsterdam (The Netherlands) and around 20 minutes from Wijk aan Zee (where the Corus Chess tournament is played every year). Chess is a wonderful game i learned to play when I was 7 years old. My father teached me the basics moves of chess and bought me my first chessboard. From then on I played it when i had time.
It is one of the few honest and purest games to see and play. In most games, for example when you watch a soccer match, sometimes the team with the lowest budget wins a game from a favorite. But most of the time the clubs with the biggest budgets (like Chelsea, Manchester United, AC Milan, Barcelona, Real Madrid, etc.) are winning, because they can buy the best players. In the Formula one Ferrari has the most money and can build the best car ... Read more >>>
what does chess represent to me?
by 1teagawell...that may be one of the better questions i've ever been asked.
what does chess represent to me?
I feel chess represents a key. a key to my mind. the liberation and change my conciousness has undergone since i began the endeavor of chess during xmas break of 2000 is still undergoing. Only because of this question have I really analyzed my growth from that moment. I guess i was busy growing:) Ultimately, my intellect, my wit, my persuit of knowledge in general, has grown exponentially since then.
my perception of self has evolved. It is a tool i use to keep myself sharp, and it seems the more i learn about the intricate workings of chess, the more i learn about the inner workings of me. It is my key:) I hope i don't sound like a l ... Read more >>>
Chess represents a large amount of strategy
by fkaplanImagine, a battle of cataclysmic proportions where you as a king must be protected at all costs. A battle where you send your queen to battle for you as she is your most formidable asset. Where even under the most promising circumstances, a pawn can take a king.
Chess represents a large amount of strategy, quick thinking, and mostly, FUN. It is most fun to get your opponents goat (so-to-speak) and get them to double guess themselves. I usually play for the social interactivity, I play because i know how, not necessarily to win. Let them have their victories on the chess board, it is still just a game.

Chess is my excape from work
by fourcsoflifeChess is my excape from work. I have a pretty stressful job. I work for the city of Santa Barbara and have to deal with people complaining about there neighbors and the trash situation day in and day out. The public often confuses me with the trash hauler and I receive even more complaints cenerning what they did or didn't do. I know that they are not mad at me but often it is difficult when these people are yelling at you, and I do mean yelling at you and everything else that goes with that, to not feel as though it is your fault. I don't want these people to be mad so I do everything I can to rectify there problem. I go out and I pick up trash and various other things that I will not include in an email just so that these people will be happy and feel as though someone cares. For those rare down times I turn to chess. It is peaceful, quite, and I love the interacti ... Read more >>>
Chess to me is a game of expressive strategy
by indianheatA game of war, a war of the minds. Chess to me is a game of expressive strategy and a game that requires one to anticipate the strategy of others. What is great about chess is that both players start out with equal opportunity and power, but it is their mind that decides whether they will overpower or be overpowered.

by BarrellFor me Chess is like poetry, not the bad stuff you see on the doors in toliets but the good stuff that's in books and the like.
In fact since I'm just CRAZY about Chess (well at least vintage French Chess), I decided to compose a poem about it.
Here it is, I hope you enjoy it.
Chess, Oh Chess,
You can even play it in the mud,
but if you're not that good,
We play chess not for the game itself
by kobesarmyChess is the view you see when you look down Mount Everest, It is the love you see when you see someone you know, Chess is the wind the tickles your cheek as you walk on a breezy day, As it sheds its majestic light, bringing the true soul out in your heart.
We play chess not for the game itself, but for the joy of playing it.

by DASMEThe reason I love the game of chess ,is , there is no hidden moves from the players it's not like a card game where you don't know what the next card will be. And there is really no luck evolved in chess. If you or you opponent make a mistake that is not luck it is ether a lack of skill or a lack of concentration. I enjoy the challenge of my opponent another human being.
